About Us

This is our story.

The Fort Zumwalt School District, located in St. Charles County, MO, has seen tremendous growth since the 1990's, and much like other school districts finding highly qualified teachers for high needs areas was becoming more and more difficult. The District  has a long history of providing excellent education for its students, and realizes that great teachers leads to a great education experience for its students.

In order to recruit great teachers in those high needs areas of special education, foreign language, industrial technology, math and science a Steering Committee, formed at the request of the Board of Education, recommended the creation of an educational foundation in order to fund a program that was having success in other districts around the country, "Grow Your Own Teachers". The Fort Zumwalt Education Foundation was created in 2005, and since then has awarded 19 students financial assistance in return for their commitment to teach at the district once they have graduated.

Much More than Financial Assistance

Great teachers are not formed solely in the classroom. Recipients of the Grow Your Own Teacher program will not only receive financial support, but also receive ongoing mentor support from current Fort Zumwalt Teachers, attendance at educational seminars, invaluable work experiences, PLUS job placement upon their completed teacher certification and program criteria.  These added-value opportunities have allowed the district to place 10 GYOT teachers in the classroom since 2007, with eight more working towards completing their degree.
